Piers Morgan’s phone book is no doubt full of celebrity entries.
And for a moment, it would have included the legendary actor Sir Anthony Hopkins.
Unfortunately for the former Good Morning Britain presenter though, the veteran actor “ghosted” him after telling him to “come over any time”.
But Piers didn’t take it to heart, and explained how the Silence of the Lambs star regularly changes his number and is “very paranoid”.
The presenter, 56, opened up on the exchange following 83-year-old Anthony winning the top gong for Best Actor at last weekend’s Oscars ceremony.
Piers revealed how an hour-long interview with the star on his old CNN show was “most memorable interview I’ve had with any actor”.
And he wrote in his Mail on Sunday column about asking the star if he could be his showbiz friend after Anthony admitted that he didn’t want to be friends with actors.
After Anthony exclaimed “yes”, Piers swiftly took the star’s digits and was told to “come over any time”.
“But when I tried calling it a few months later, he’d already changed it again,” Piers admitted.
“Hopkins has brutally strict rules for friendship that may explain why he’s such a loner.”
Piers recalled how Anthony told him on the show: “I’ve had a few friends along the way. So-called friends, God bless them. But they decided to offer me unsolicited criticism and I said goodbye. When people say ‘Do you mind if I’m honest?’, I say, yes, bye.”
He also revealed, perhaps surprisingly, that he was pals with Randy Jackson, but the friendship with the American Idol judge fizzled out because of Anthony’s constant number changing.
Anthony, who won the Best Actor Oscar a week ago, drew criticism from some quarters for his lack of appearance at the awards.
But his no-show didn’t come as a surprise for Piers.
He went on to reveal how the actor had once told him: “I’m not into all that luvvie stuff. It gives me a rash.”
