Congress should scan election debacles: Kapil Sibal

The Congress leadership continues to echo the simmering internal unease about the party’s unabated electoral reversals despite the Covid-imposed limitations on full-fledged political discourse. Kapil Sibal, part of the Congress change-seekers, on Thursday said the leadership should take note of the internal noises of concerns and must look into the reasons for the electoral routs.

As part of the AICC’s attempt to keep internal focus away, at least for a while, from the messy electoral and organisational issues by citing Covid exigencies, Sonia Gandhi will hold a virtual meeting with Congress MPs of both houses of Parliament on Friday “on Covid issues”.

Stressing that he would reserve more elaborate comments on electoral issues until the Covid situation improves, Sibal said, “The Congress has not performed well in the recently-held Assembly polls. It failed in Assam and Kerala. The party could not secure a single seat in West Bengal…Now when voices are being raised from the party, this debacle should be looked into”.

“We’ll present our views. Today, everyone from all parties should work together to save people’s lives amid Covid-19,” he added.

Kerala observers

Meanwhile, the AICC is planning to send two observers, most likely Mallikarjun Kharge and V Vaithilingam, to Kerala to assess the newly-elected party MLAs’ views on the election of the new Leader of the Opposition. This is after rumblings erupted among Congress leaders of the state post-defeat with some seeking change of CLP and PCC leaderships and some others arguing for the continuation of the outgoing Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala.
