The national retailers join a growing group of businesses that are no longer requiring vaccinated shoppers to wear face masks in their stores, except where state and local regulations mandate them. The news follows the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updating its guidelines last week to say masks and social distancing were not necessary for vaccinated people.

Many retailers started requiring customers to wear masks in their stores last summer, but enforcing the policy has proven difficult amid shifting regulations and public health recommendations.

Target said it recommends customers and employees who are not fully vaccinated wear masks. Macy’s will also recommend masks for all vaccinated customers and will continue to require workers to wear them.
