Bob Arum drops huge hint at Canelo Alvarez’s next opponent

Top Rank CEO Bob Arum is confident Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will take on one of his star fighters next.

There has been a few notable names left at the super middleweight division but Canelo Alvarez is already so over with it and has now locked his sights on light heavyweight and cruiserweight supremacy.

The Mexican superstar is hoping to continue where he left off in the light heavyweight division, having ended his 2021 run with a bang. Topping the list of his possible opponents are WBO champion Joe Smith Jr. and IBF and WBC champion Artur Beterbiev, who both represent Bob Arum’s Top Rank Inc.

According to Arum, he has learned that Canelo’s representatives have already “hinted” at their desire to take Joe Smith first before unifying the belts against Artur Beterbiev.

“There haven’t been any real conversations [for Canelo vs Artur Beterbiev],” Arum revealed via Boxing Scene. “I think they might wanna fight Joe Smith Jr. next and then go to Beterbiev to unify the titles. They sort of hinted at that.”

Canelo’s promoter Eddie Hearn had previously insisted that despite the “talk of cruiserweight,” he wants the multi-division champ to wipe out the light heavyweight division the same way he did at super middleweight.

“I know there’s talk of the cruiserweight fight. I just think that he [Canelo] should do exactly the same as he did at 168 at 175,” Hearn said. “He should fight [Dmitry] Bivol, Joe Smith and [Artur] Beterbiev, and I think he can do it all in a year AGAIN.”

As it stands, Dmitry Bivol and Beterbiev have both retained their titles earlier this month while Smith will defend his WBO belt against Callum Johnson next month.
