Towns and cities across the South Island all reached freezing temperatures overnight.
Queenstown, Timaru, Invercargill and Christchurch all dropped below zero. Omarama, in Canterbury’s McKenzie District, recorded -10C, according to MetService.
Police are asking those on the road to take extra care. Conditions were frosty, particularly in Dunedin’s hilly suburbs.
Motorists were asked to delay travel if possible, and drive to the conditions.
