Four bridges on Route 711 targeted for replacement


Motorists on Route 711 may run into temporary detours during the 2023 construction season, when PennDOT expects to replace four bridges along the road in Westmoreland and Fayette counties.

Plans for all four bridges may be viewed online through Aug. 31.

Visit PennDOT.pa.gov/District12 and click on “Public Meetings/Studies” under the District Links heading. Select the “Westmoreland County” box and then the “Route 711 Group Bridges Improvement Project” tile.

Beginning at the north end of the project, the bridges slated for replacement in Westmoreland County carry Route 711 over: Tubmill Creek, at the border of St. Clair and Fairfield townships; Hendricks Creek in Fairfield; and a Loyalhanna Creek tributary in Ligonier Township.

In Fayette County, a bridge over Rasler Run is slated for replacement in Springfield Township.

The Tubmill Creek bridge, which is listed in “poor to serious” condition, will be replaced with a wider pre-cast concrete box culvert.

A one-week detour is anticipated, with passenger cars diverted along a northbound route of nearly 9 miles and a southbound route of almost 14 miles.

The official detour for trucks and RV campers will take them nearly 28 miles out of the way.

The bridge over Hendricks Creek is considered in fair condition.

Still, PennDOT wants to replace the superstructure and deck, rehabilitate the abutments and make improvements to the approaching roadway.

Construction is expected to be completed in phases over several months, with no detour planned.

In poor condition, the bridge over the Loyalhanna tributary will be replaced with a 72-inch reinforced concrete pipe. The project includes a slight shift in the road alignment and elimination of masonry walls.

There will be a weekend detour of about 6 miles for passenger cars and about 14 miles for trucks.

PennDOT has noted defects in the deck of the Rasler Run bridge, which will be remedied with a reinforced concrete slab. Crews will repair the bridge barrier and will install a new guide rail.

A weekend detour will add more than 11 miles of travel for passenger cars and more than 27 miles for trucks.

The online plan display includes a project map and timeline. It also provides an opportunity for public input.
