Liverpool are in desperate need of midfield reinforcements this summer following an injury crisis at the club, and now a new potential transfer target has been identified with just eight days left for the club to seal a deal.
What’s the latest?
According to TNT Argentina (via TNT Sports), Liverpool are interested in signing Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Leandro Paredes.
As per the report, Jurgen Klopp is keen to add a new midfielder before the transfer window closes but the Merseysiders are set to compete with Juventus for the signature of the player.
Liverpool remain winless in the Premier League at present with two draws and a disappointing defeat at Old Trafford on Monday evening, and are currently one of just five teams in the top flight that have failed to pick up their first three-pointer of the season.
There are many areas of complaint on the current form of the team but none more so than the glaring injury situation in the centre of the pitch with Naby Keita, Curtis Jones, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Thiago Alcantara all currently recovering from various fitness issues.
As a result, the signing of Paredes couldn’t come at a better time for the Reds as he could not only be the perfect Thiago replacement whilst the Spaniard recovers from an ongoing hamstring issue, but also a player that could push the current midfielders for their positions beyond Thiago’s recovery.
The 28-year-old is predominantly a deep defensive midfielder but has displayed many attacking-minded attributes over his time with the Ligue One Champions and as a result could comfortably cover the position needed during the Liverpool midfielder’s absence.
Over 22 appearances last season, Paredes scored one goal and delivered two assists, taking 68.1 touches and making 1.5 tackles per game, as well as being successful in the overwhelming majority of his dribble attempts (86%) and tallying up an impressive 96% pass completion rate.
Not only that, the Argentine ranks in the top 1% of his positional peers in the top five European league for pass completion and the top 11% for progressive passes, proving that Paredes has no trouble dictating play from deep and could certainly work with Fabinho to aim for better control in the midfield at Anfield.
Should Liverpool sign Leandro Paredes?
“I have always said that I found this player to be super strong.
“He’s smart, technical, aggressive in a good way, and he’s not just a nasty gamer. It is also beautiful to watch. His tempo is perfect.”
With that being said, the signing of Paredes could be a great opportunity to not only give Klopp some extra depth in Thiago’s position but also will give Fabinho some competition for his position too over the season ahead.
