Three young people have been arrested and one was injured in Palmerston North after their spiked car crashed into another vehicle.

Police said in a statement they were called at 6.40pm on Thursday about a stolen vehicle in Levin, with the car spotted by officers travelling north from Shannon.

“A pursuit was not initiated,” the statement said.

The allegedly stolen car was spiked at 7pm on State Highway 56 in Longburn, but it continued at low speeds on damaged tyres before crashing into another vehicle at the intersection of Cardiff St and Pioneer Highway.

Out of the four occupants in the fleeing vehicle, one has been “taken to hospital for assessment” while the other three were arrested.

The person in the other vehicle suffered minor injuries.

St John Ambulance said an ambulance, two rapid response vehicles and a manager were called to the scene at Pioneer Highway after 7pm, as two cars flipped on their sides, with one person taken to Palmerston North Hospital.

The four young people in the fleeing car would be referred to Youth Aid.
