Transfer Credit Card Points To LifeMiles With 25% Bonus

LifeMiles is one of my favorite Star Alliance frequent flyer programs, thanks to the great redemption rates on Star Alliance partners, plus all the ways there are to earn miles with the program. Not only does LifeMiles often have promotions on purchased miles, but the program also partners with major transferable points currencies. At the moment there’s a bonus when converting points to LifeMiles.

Transfer points to LifeMiles with 25% bonus

Between November 15 and December 17, 2021, you can receive a 25% bonus when transferring select partner rewards to the LifeMiles program. Specifically, this applies when transferring points from:

  • Citi ThankYou
  • Capital One
  • Brex
  • The only major credit card transfer partner that’s excluded is Amex Membership Rewards

As you’d expect, there are some terms to be aware of:

  • The transfer ratio is usually 1,000:1,000, so during the promotion period you can transfer points at a 1,000:1,250 ratio
  • This bonus won’t be reflected with credit card partners, as this offer is on LifeMiles’ end
  • Bonus LifeMiles will post within 24 hours, though will generally post the same time as the standard miles, but as a separate transaction
  • There’s no limit to how many points you can transfer and get the bonus for
  • There’s no registration required

Is earning LifeMiles worth it?

Avianca is in the Star Alliance, which means you can redeem LifeMiles on all Star Alliance airlines (which is what makes the program so great). To give a few examples of one-way premium cabin redemption rates (there are no fuel surcharges on any awards):

  • US to Europe in business class costs 63,000 miles
  • US to Europe in first class costs 87,000 miles
  • US to Southeast Asia in business class costs 78,000 miles
  • US to North Asia in first class costs 90,000 miles

Sometimes there are promotions on redemptions, which can offer even more value.

Personally I wouldn’t speculatively transfer points, but with a specific use in mind this could be a great value, whether you’re looking at traveling in first class on All Nippon Airways or Lufthansa, or are looking at traveling in business class on a countless number of airlines.

LifeMiles doesn’t always have access to the same award availability as Star Alliance partners, for better or worse. In some cases the program doesn’t have access to partner awards that other airlines do have access to, and in other cases the inverse is true.

That’s why I always recommend doing some “dummy” award searches before acquiring miles in a program, so you can get a sense of how award availability lines up with your needs.

While Avianca is in Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the airline has received further funding, and the LifeMiles program is also separately managed and owned. While I don’t think it’s going to happen here (especially with global travel recovering), see this post to learn more about what happens to airline miles if an airline goes bankrupt.

Bottom line

Right now you can receive a 25% bonus when you transfer Citi ThankYou points, Capital One miles, and Brex points, to the LifeMiles program. This bonus is being offered on LifeMiles’ end, so this won’t be reflected on the websites of partners.

Personally I use LifeMiles all the time for premium cabin Star Alliance redemptions, and find the program consistently offers great value. Just remember that LifeMiles also sells miles directly, often at a reasonable cost, so I know some prefer to save their points for other uses, and just buy miles directly.

Do you plan on converting credit card rewards points into LifeMiles with this bonus?
