Police are asking for help to identify someone who robbed a petrol station in Whakatāne with a knife.

A person entered Caltex Whakatane on Commerce St holding a knife at around 1am on Saturday November 20, detective senior sergeant Paul Wilson said in a statement.

The person jumped over the counter and demanded cigarettes and cash, threatening the only attendant working.

A scuffle broke out, and the staff member sustained a small cut to his finger.

“As part of our inquiries we are looking to identify the person pictured, who wore a grey face mask with a teeth design printed on it, and a distinctive puffer hoodie,” Wilson said.

Wilson said officers were confident someone in the community could identify this person.

People with information should call police on 105 and quote the file number 211120/8158. Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
